Director Profile: Vicki Wyant

Vicki Wyant is a Redwood music director and coordinator of music for the Saratoga Union School District. She teaches the Redwood Honor Chorus and oversees the district elementary school orchestra, band, ensemble, jazz and color guard/dance team programs. Mrs. Wyant also teaches piano privately. She received her Bachelors Degree in Music and a Minor in Drama from San Jose State University. Mrs. Wyant has played with the California Youth Symphony, Santa Clara Philharmonic Orchestra, San Jose State University Symphony Orchestra and String Ensembles, and the San Jose State Symphonic Band.

Mrs. Wyant has been teaching in the public school system for 49 years. She has taught in the Saratoga Union School District three separate spans of time, with this most recent time spanning more than 16 years! Throughout her career, she has taught vocal and instrumental music from kindergarten through the 8th grade. Her primary instruments are string bass and piano, though she also plays cello, guitar, many percussion instruments and a little on most woodwind and brass instruments. Mrs. Wyant especially loves the low brass.

Most recently, Mrs. Wyant’s many years of service to our community and its young adults were honored as she was elected the 2008 Redwood Middle School Teacher of the Year. A couple weeks following, she was also announced the Music Educator of the Year by KDFC radio (102.1 FM), an honor nominated by community listener Ann Burns. Per Ann:

“Vicki encourages and develops middle school students to discover a love of music and participation, whether it be band, orchestra, color guard, choir or all of the above.  She continually reminds us parents that middle school is the time to try things and makes it possible for our children to try it all. She takes the students to competitions to see other programs and makes it fun. She teaches the essential skills of life, not just music - be committed to something, be on time, be your best, and of course, practice, practice, practice!”
